Why We Love This Watch

As the world of horology advances by adding interesting complications, some of which are footnotes in the past, most of the time, they’re added for either the sake of art or a demonstration of a brand’s prowess. However, one complication hasn’t had the modern resurgence that it deserves and it’s the analog alarm watch. A complication that’s often taken-for-granted in modern times (I’m pretty sure you’ve snoozed your smartphone alarm at least twice before getting up in the morning), it started life as an 1899 pocket watch patent by the Durrstein brothers which eventually became a 1908 wristwatch patent by Eterna. Ironically, it was in 1947 that Vulcain made the Cricket watch which launched the success of the analog alarm wristwatch. As its success grew, luxury watch manufacturer Jaeger LeCoultre eventually made their version in 1951 and Girard-Perregaux, being the direct competitor of Jaeger LeCoultre, replied with their own in 1954.

The Girard-Perregaux Alarm Watch garnered critical success due to its exceptional quality and ergonomic design, both of which are highly important in watches. Powered by the Calibre 111-285, a collaborated movement with A Schild (predecessor to the modern-day movement supplier ETA), only 900 was ever made despite critical success. Knowing how fickle the vintage market can get, such a watch may become a future collectible and this Girard-Perregaux Alarm Watch gives such an enticing proposition to be bought now than later while the prices are of a realistic value proposition.
